GTA 6: Major New Details Revealed About Weather, Wildlife, Activities, and the World

Rockstar Games has revealed a wealth of new information about Grand Theft Auto 6, offering a closer look at the game’s ambitious weather systems, expansive wildlife, diverse NPCs, activities, transportation, and overall world design.

The latest details provide a clearer picture of Leonida, Rockstar’s fictionalized take on Florida, while also highlighting how player choices will influence the story and the relationship between protagonists Jason and Lucia.

Hurricanes Are Confirmed for GTA 6

One of the most heavily speculated features of GTA 6 has now been confirmed: hurricanes will appear in the game.

Given Florida’s association with major tropical storms, fans have long wondered whether Rockstar would attempt to recreate the scale and intensity of a hurricane in an open-world game. Speaking with Game Informer, Rockstar confirmed that hurricanes will be part of GTA 6, although the studio has not revealed how frequently they will occur or whether they will directly affect the game’s story.

Rockstar’s approach to hurricanes is designed to make them feel like major environmental events rather than simple changes to the weather. Players can expect heavy cloud cover, powerful winds, dense atmospheric effects, and intense rainfall. Water will accumulate across the environment, pour from rooftops and street fixtures, while thunder and lightning dramatically transform the sky.

GTA 6’s Weather System Has Been Completely Re-Engineered

Rockstar has rebuilt its weather technology for GTA 6 to support localized, persistent, and dynamic weather conditions.

That means weather will not necessarily affect the entire map at once. Players could be enjoying clear skies in one area while watching a storm develop in the distance. The transition between different weather conditions is also designed to leave visible traces throughout the environment.

Rainbows and puddles will appear after storms, allowing players to recognize that an area has recently experienced rainfall even if they were nowhere nearby when it happened.

Wind will also have a tangible effect on the world. It can create ripples across bodies of water, move hair and clothing, and push debris through the environment, adding another layer of environmental detail to Leonida.

GTA 6 Will Have Rockstar’s Biggest and Densest Map Yet

Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut confirmed that GTA 6’s map is approximately twice the size of GTA 5’s, although the studio’s focus is not simply on making the map larger.

Density is a major part of Rockstar’s approach to the world. Leonida is being designed with a greater emphasis on detailed interiors, rooftops, alleys, streets, and other locations that make the environment feel fully realized.

“This new world is different,” Garbut explained. “We obsessed about every part – the rooftops, the alleys, the internals and everything in between.”

According to Rockstar, the sheer number of interiors and interactive details has reached a point where buildings should feel more believable both inside and out. Rather than treating the map as a collection of isolated locations, the studio wants Leonida to feel like one cohesive world filled with handcrafted details and densely packed content.

GTA 6’s Map Is Divided Into Six Major Regions

Leonida will contain six distinct regions, each designed to offer its own environments and activities:

  • Vice City
  • Leonida Keys
  • Grassrivers
  • Port Gellhorn
  • Ambrosia
  • Mount Kalaga National Park

Vice City will be the most recognizable location for returning fans, serving as a modern interpretation of the setting from 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Different Regions Will Have Their Own Factions

The various regions of Leonida will not simply differ visually. Some areas will also be controlled or influenced by different groups.

Ambrosia, for example, is a more rural industrial region filled with factories and refineries. The area is dominated by a biker gang that appears to be separate from The Lost MC, the motorcycle gang previously featured prominently in GTA 4 and GTA 5.

This regional approach should give different parts of the map their own identities, characters, conflicts, and gameplay opportunities.

GTA 6’s Story Will Take Players Across the Entire Map

With such a large open world, Rockstar knows that players could potentially find the sheer scale of Leonida overwhelming. To address this, the main story is designed to naturally take players through different parts of the map.

The narrative will introduce players to a variety of environments, while highlighting the contrast between Leonida’s wealthier communities and its poorer areas. The story will not necessarily take players to every corner of the map, but it should provide a guided introduction to many of its major regions.

GTA 6 Introduces Ride-Share Fast Travel

Fast travel is returning in a new form. Players will be able to use ride-share vehicles to quickly travel around the world, providing a more convenient alternative to driving across the entire map.

However, GTA 6 puts its own spin on the system. These rides are shared with other passengers, meaning players can encounter NPCs and potentially listen to unique conversations during their journey.

You Can Doomscroll on Snapmatic

If players would rather ignore their fellow passengers, GTA 6 will let them spend the journey browsing Snapmatic, Rockstar’s fictional social media platform inspired by real-world photo-sharing apps.

The feature adds another way for players to interact with the game’s digital world while traveling between locations.

Jason and Lucia Cannot Post on Social Media

Although players can browse Snapmatic, Jason and Lucia will not be able to freely post their own content.

Rockstar has explained that the protagonists are on the run, meaning excessive social media activity would create unnecessary risks for them. This limitation also fits into the broader narrative surrounding their criminal activities and attempts to stay out of trouble.

GTA 6 Features a Huge Variety of Side Activities

Leonida will offer plenty of activities outside the main story. Rockstar has revealed a selection of side activities that players can participate in throughout the world:

  • Base jumping
  • Billiards
  • Gyms
  • Kayaking
  • Mini golf
  • Scuba diving
  • Street racing
  • Off-road racing
  • Zoos
  • Air boating
  • Jet skiing

These activities are intended to make Leonida feel like a living world that offers things to do beyond missions and criminal enterprises.

GTA 6 Features More Than 170 Animal Species

Wildlife will play a much larger role in GTA 6, with Rockstar confirming more than 170 animal species across Leonida.

The wildlife roster includes more than 60 bird species, over 30 land mammals, as well as numerous fish and reptiles. Animals will populate different environments based on their natural habitats, from urban areas and rural landscapes to oceans, wetlands, and swamp regions.

Players will also be able to interact with certain animals. Previous gameplay footage has already shown Jason interacting with dogs, suggesting that animal encounters could be more detailed than in previous Grand Theft Auto games.

Rockstar vice president of dynamic art Michael Kane explained that the team wanted to accurately represent Florida’s diverse ecosystem across Leonida’s different biomes, including urban and rural environments, inland waterways, oceans, wetlands, and swamp areas.

The animals have been researched and designed with detailed movement and animation systems intended to make them feel like natural parts of the world rather than simple background elements.

Aquatic Animals Have Their Own Behaviors

GTA 6’s underwater environments will contain a variety of marine life, including different shark species, jellyfish, whales, turtles, and rays.

Rockstar says these creatures will feature distinct movement behaviors and can be encountered while scuba diving. This should make underwater exploration feel more dynamic and unpredictable.

Hunting May Be Returning in GTA 6

One screenshot featured in Game Informer’s coverage shows Jason approaching deer in the wilderness with a rifle strapped to his back. While Rockstar has not fully detailed the feature, the image strongly suggests that some form of hunting will be available in GTA 6.

Hunting appeared in GTA 5 in a relatively limited capacity, while Red Dead Redemption 2 significantly expanded the concept with tracking, animal quality, resources, and a much deeper ecosystem.

Animal Tracking and Rare Wildlife Are Back

GTA 6 will also allow players to track animals, bringing another feature associated with Red Dead Redemption 2 into Rockstar’s latest open-world game.

Rockstar has confirmed that rare animal variants will exist, although the studio has not yet revealed which species players will be able to find or how these rare encounters will work.

GTA 6 Offers Multiple Ways to Approach Robberies

Robberies remain a central part of GTA 6’s gameplay, but players will have greater freedom in determining how they approach certain situations.

Players can potentially choose to work together as Jason and Lucia, operate alone, approach a robbery aggressively, or attempt to remain unnoticed. These decisions can influence the level of police response that follows.

Jason and Lucia Can Escape the Police Together or Split Up

The two protagonists can cooperate when escaping from law enforcement or split up to divide the police response.

However, there are limits to how far this strategy can go. If either Jason or Lucia becomes overwhelmed by the police, the encounter can end in failure.

Carjacking Is More Complex in GTA 6

Stealing cars will involve more variety and additional risks in GTA 6. Higher-end vehicles may require specialized tools to break into, while successfully stealing one can still leave players dealing with trackers and security systems.

Players will be able to use an app called WAiNK to examine a vehicle’s resale value, security features, and the cost of converting it into a personal vehicle.

If players decide to sell a stolen vehicle, they will need to take it to a fence rather than simply selling it through a conventional dealership.

Player Choices Can Shape Jason and Lucia’s Relationship

The relationship between Jason and Lucia will also be influenced by player decisions.

Although the two characters may develop romantic feelings for one another, players will have an influence over whether their relationship remains platonic or develops further. Players can spend time together, take each other on dates, respond to calls and messages, and perform smaller gestures such as opening doors or holding hands.

These interactions are part of a broader relationship system that gives players greater control over how Jason and Lucia’s connection develops throughout the story.

Choices Can Change GTA 6’s Story

Rockstar has confirmed that player decisions will have consequences beyond Jason and Lucia’s relationship.

Both major and seemingly minor choices can influence the overall story, potentially leading to different narrative developments. As a result, Rockstar is designing GTA 6 with replayability in mind, encouraging players to experience the story again and discover alternative outcomes and story threads.

Rockstar Is Aiming to Exceed Expectations With GTA 6

Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut acknowledged the enormous expectations surrounding GTA 6 and explained that the studio’s response has been to increase the scope and depth of virtually every aspect of the game.

“Everything is dialed up – detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction and density.”

Rather than sacrificing world scale for detail or interaction, Rockstar says it has attempted to push all of these elements further than it has in previous projects.

GTA 6’s NPCs Are More Diverse and Detailed Than Ever

Rockstar has also significantly expanded the variety of NPCs populating Leonida.

Characters will differ in height, body shape, skin characteristics, and other physical traits. NPCs can also have features such as tans and moles, while body proportions will vary considerably from one character to another.

The goal is to make the population of Leonida feel less repetitive and more representative of a living, diverse environment.

GTA 6 Has Rockstar’s Largest Clothing and Accessories Collection

Players will have access to an enormous selection of clothing and accessories, giving them more ways to customize their characters and spend the money earned throughout the game.

NPC clothing will also vary depending on where characters live and spend their time. People in poorer areas may wear clothing that appears more weathered or dirty, while clothing choices elsewhere can reflect the social environment and local culture.

Rockstar says GTA 6 features the largest range of garments and accessories the studio has created, supported by detailed materials, colors, patterns, branding, footwear, watches, sunglasses, and hats.

Clothing can also reflect contextual details such as dirt, weathering, fit, location, and the character’s social circumstances. This level of variation should help reinforce Rockstar’s broader goal of making Leonida feel like a cohesive and believable world.

GTA 6 Is Shaping Up to Be Rockstar’s Most Detailed Open World Yet

From hurricanes and localized weather to more than 170 animal species, a larger and denser map, expanded NPC variety, fast travel, side activities, vehicle theft mechanics, and branching character relationships, Rockstar is significantly expanding the systems that make its open worlds feel alive.

Perhaps most notably, many of these features are interconnected with the world itself. Weather leaves visible traces, wildlife behaves differently depending on its environment, NPCs dress according to their surroundings, and player choices can influence both relationships and the wider story.

With Rockstar continuing to reveal new information about GTA 6, these details offer a broader look at the scale and ambition behind Leonida and the systems players will encounter when they finally step into the game’s world.

When the sun sets and the neon lights begin to glow, everyone has something to gain—and even more to lose.
